Oregon Scientific THT312 Wired Indoor/Outdoor Thermometer and ClockReviewsHave one monitoring freezer in garage. The new one is being used to monitor temperatures in a media cabinet as I adjust fans. Very visible display, and having both ambient and sensor temps at the same time at a large display size is great. No problems whatsoever. Gives me the temp outside the house and in the bedroom. What, it should do something else? I've had this model for 4 years now, and it's worked flawlessly. Now, however, I find the sun has turned the outdoor temperature wire insulation hard and brittle. The plastic insulation now shatters with any stress or bending on it, making keeping it connected impossible. A simple replacement part would help with this. Otherwise, this thermometer should last indefinitely. I'll probably buy another. I purchased 2 of thermometers, one for my son-in-law and one for my husband. Can't review the one sent to Maryland but the one at use here in my home is great. I truly never cared about the indoor/outdoor temperature until my husband set ours up and now we both find ourselves checking it each time we pass it. Great fun! I think this is a great buy for a weather update outside. The inside temp is off b/c I have it near the window. But come on for the price, you really cant ask for much more. Go for it! La Crosse Technology 9160U Digital Thermometer with Wireless RemoteReviewsThe La Crosse Technology 9160U Digital Thermometer with Wireless Remote is an improved replacement for our former La Crosse Technology Wireless Weather Station with Forecast Model WS-7211U-CBP. After several years frustration with the former model's temperature accuracy (compared with two other devices in the vicinity) and its tentative electronics (the digital clock inexplicably stopped functioning), we gave La Crosse a second chance with the better looking, easier to read (especially from a distance) and seemingly more temperature accurate 9160U. So far so good. Don't waste your money. I purchased the 9160U (which comes with one TX29U transmitter) and 2 TX37U transmitters. I followed the link from Amazon through to La Crosse's website and tried to verify that the TX37U worked with the 9160U. As far as I could tell the website said it did. When the products arrived I tried multiple times to follow the poorly worded setup instructions, waiting the indicated interval between each attempt. Only the first transmitter was recognized by the 9160U. I called La Crosse customer service (not available on weekends) and was told that the TX37U was NOT compatible with the 9160U. So, I shipped the TX37Us back to Amazon and ordered 2 TX29U transmitters. When these arrived I tried again and this time NONE of the transmitters were recognized by the 9160U. This time I returned the whole lot. Amazon's return policy worked well. They refunded the purchase price plus the estimated postage, so all I lost was the time trying to make the product work and the time standing in line at the post office to return it. It was a little smaller than I expected based on the picture (even though I read the dimensions). The display is very easy to read even across a room. I mounted this one in my kitchen and bought two wireless remotes for it. One remote is in my backyard so I can monitor the outdoor temperature (so I can make sure the dog is cozy when it is cold outside and/or my pool doesn't freeze). The other I keep in my garage (I am a home brewer and use it to monitor fermentation temps). This unit is easy to set, the only hassle is when the batteries on the main unit need to be replaced you have to follow a specific procedure to get it to pick up the wireless remote signals. Not a big hassle, I just wish it was automatic. You can either hang this (it has a screw mount) or it has a stand for use on a counter/table. Overall I am happy with this unit. I bought a couple of these this last Christmas (2009), one for a gift and one to use myself. I liked the idea of the large read out and the simplicity of the display. Time, inside temp, and outside temp. I didn't see the need for the full blown weather station with the ability to forecast the weather. Somehow I don't think a simple device can do what mankind has struggled with for the last 100 years at least. But I digress... As stated, the readout is big and clear so that's a plus. It requires little knowledge to set it up correctly. Just follow the included instructions and you'll be up and running in 5 minutes. I've only had it running now for two months but the regular alkaline batteries are holding up well. With the remote set about 80 - 100 feet away it indicates with a flashing icon that it's receiving the signal fine. So that's all good. Now the bad. Or maybe I should say "not so good." It's accuracy is questionable to be sure. Even putting the remote right alongside the indoor unit the readings aren't exact. You would think it would be at least +/- .5° in that scenario but that's not the case. Mine seemed to wonder +/- 2° between what the indoor and outdoor readout indicated while sitting right next to each other. Although it seemed to get a little better with time, it never got exact or even within the .5° mark. So I decided to put the remote under the roof edge of the north facing outside wall of the house. About 40 feet (and three walls) away. The first thing I noticed is that it took a very long time for the outside temperature to change. I mean really long. After sitting out there all night I compared the temperature I was getting with the local weather. My thermometer was reading 5°F high. Hmmm.... Went out to my Jeep and checked the temperature on the information center which has always been accurate. It also showed my theremometer as reading 5° high. I assumed it was possible the my house was loosing "some" heat, but if that was the case I needed to do some insulating mighty quick. So anyway, I moved the remote out to my un-attached and un-heated garage. Now it is constantly reading between 6° - 18° high! I mean really, 18 degrees off? What's the point? The colder it gets here in Wisconsin the more it's off. Today with the temperature a balmy 27°F outside according to the local weather station, my theremometer says it's 33°F. It seems the warmer it gets the closer it gets to reality. I was tempted to send it back since a thermometer that is this inaccurate isn't worth the batteries it's discharging, but thought WTH. I didn't pay all that much for it and it's better than nothing, just barely. I'll have to check with the person I gifted with the other one. I suspect that one isn't any different. I think given the low price this is what one could expect, even though I was hoping for better. In summary.... The clock is dead on accurate. Readout is big and clear. Hasn't eaten any batteries yet (two months and counting). Range seems fine. Indoor temperature seems about right. The outdoor temperature is slow to react and has a mind of it's own. So yeah, not bad but not great either. I was looking for a simple, no frills weather thermometer and chose this model over others and other manufacturers. The first one that I ordered was defective and wasted more time trying to get it going that I should have. Calling customer service at LaCrosse is a joke. They put you on hold leading you to believe that they are busy, well they should be. They put you through two wait cycles on the phone, then they ask that you leave a message and "someone will get back to you" still waiting after a week. they probably don't have a customer a support department, its just a phony number to call. Well thank goodness for Amazon.com. They made this exchange painless and so easy. They paid for return shipping and replacement of the product at no additional charge AND mailed out the replacement item before I even mailed back the defective unit. That is why I shop thru Amazon.com. The replacement is working fine, but I would shop around for another manufacturer if I were you. Average Rating:![]() |

Maverick RediChek Remote Wireless Smoker ThermometerReviewsI went ahead and purchased one of these despite reviews. My only kicker on the 5 stars is that I looked up online the modifications to do to these units to get better reception. I pulled it out of the box and did the mods. My smoker sets in front of the shop about 125 feet from the house, I can take the receiver anywhere in my house and it reads/receives great. So I don't know how it works with out the mods, but with the mods it works great. Works well for monitoring the water temperature of an outside wood stove by placing the temp probes next to the hot water tubing. I love to smoke meat and Im a stick burner but I dont like to go outside to check my temps. also dont like to be up and down all night when doing a big pork butt or something thats really slow cooking. This unit has made it so I can do things inside and monitor my temps only going outside to stoke when needed. also the Alarm feature has let me sleep through the night. I set my high and low temps and it alerts me when they fall below them or above. It has great range and super bright display. I really like that I can monitor the meat as well as the smoker chamber temp. I say get it well worth the moeny. I looked at the mix reviews and decided to give this thing a chance. I was looking for a remote thermometer for my smoker which had dual probes to measuer meat and air temp. This was the only one I could afford which had (some) decent reviews. I have owned it for 2 months now and just finished my 4th 8 - 10hour smoke; it has worked great on every one. My smoker is on my patio and I have had no transmission problems when I am anywhere in my house. I really like the user selectable high/low air temperature feature. I was to provide a pork butt for lunch which meant I had to start it around 3am. I started the fire, got the meat on and after everything stabilized I was able to go back to bed. It notified me when the temp started dropping when the fire needed more coals. I have only used this thermometer on a few smokes, but it has worked just fine. The transmitter distance is more than adequate....even through walls. Although it is mildly inconvenient to have the transmitter on/off switch inside the battery compartment, the device is designed that way to protect the switch from moisture/weather. The battery compartment door has a gasket to keep the switch waterproof and it is easily opened with a fingertip. So far I consider it a good investment. Average Rating:![]() |

Honeywell C7089U1006 outdoor temperature sensor for TH7000 & TH8000 series thermostatsReviewsThis is a great product;I installed it myself and it recordsthe outside temperature on my Honeywell thermostat. I am very pleased with it. It is accurate as I have read the resistance from the chart and it is right on. What I like so much is that I don't have to guess at what it is outside for shutting my Heat pump down for instance if the temperature is too cold for the heat pump to be effective. But best of all was the price I got it for. The contractor quoted me almost 4 times The price but with shipping it was still about 1/3rd of the price and I didn't have to leave my home and waste my precious time.Thank you Amazon for making this possible. I have waited for this day for many years. Thanks---Ted R in Idaho The Honeywell C7089U1006 Outdoor Temperature Sensor was easy to hook up and install, but a little more $$ than I really should have paid, I put this in when I installed the new programmable thermostat. Now I have a reference to the outside temp at the thermostat. I don't know if they make a compatible cordless remote, which would be easier, but this one, so far seems accurate and operable. Plan on splicing the contact lines, however, as the leads are only 6 feet long detailed instructions come with the product. It is very easy to install and works very well. This product works great with the correct thermostat. I have a Trane/Honeywell TH8321U. Its easy to install, only took 18-2 gauge wire from Home Depot and two wire nuts. Not a whole lot to say about this other than its a great little add on! Very easy to install and does what it says. Keep in mind you have to activate the feature in the 'installers' menu on the thermostat. Very good and inexpensive add on to your top of the line thermostat! Average Rating:![]() |

WOLF-Garten Outdoor Broom #B40MReviewsI bought this broom from a local hardware store some years ago. It is so great that I decided to get another one for my house in the South. Everybody should have a broom like this. I use it with bleach and everything else. It just doesn't wear out. (Unfortunately,, the handle got lost in the mail and I will be ordering another one). Wolf-Garten has a winner here - I recommend starting with steel telescoping handle (as I did) for most versatility. The broom is excellent quality - well-made attachment that is durable & rot-proof. Thrilled to have found this "system" for all my lawn/garden maintanance needs. Attaches really easily, snaps into place & stays there until you unattach it. Definitely recommend for quality & price. Yes, it is just a broom attachment, you need to buy the handle seperately. It does a great job pushing all the gunk along, from dead bugs to leaves to dirt. I did not completely read the Amazon description, which is somewhat misleading, (the yellow casing of the red bristles is actually 14 and 1/2 inches wide; depth 2 inches), and I was expecting a full size push broom thing, like you see janitors use. I believe that size would be more appropriate for outdoor use. Anyway it does such a good job, and since it is smaller than I thought, I just might get another for use on hard floor surfaces in my home. I bought the aluminum handle which is ightweight. Both the handle and connection gizmo seem very sturdy, and I hope these qualities last over time. Unless you want to sweep on your hands and knees, make sure you purchase the handle separately! Indoor Outdoor Talking Thermometer by Voice Zone - A18033ReviewsVery accurate and the voice tone is very loud. At night I can clearly hear the hourly voice clearly in another room. Very nice item.. I am amazed how well this cheap unit works. I bought it as an experiment, and it's great. The volume is controllable, and voice is friendly, and clear. For a small unit, the screen is amazingly readable. You can easily read the temperature from the other side of a large room - 18-20 ft away. The programming gives you all kind of options for the voice to announce just one or two temperatures on an hourly basis. Using the alarm feature, it gives you a full repeated readout at a preferred time of day (no, we don't actually use it as an alarm, but it's a great way to highlight some time of day e.g., noon, or 5:00 pm). The sensor is sealed with the cable, and that is sealed into the unit. So, you can't disconnect the sensor to run the wire. To install it through a wall (as I did, into my sun room), you need about a 3/8 inch hole. That's much bigger than I would have preferred. Other than that, installation couldn't be easier for a wired sensor system. Average Rating:![]() |

Oregon Scientific BAR388HGA Wireless Weather Station with Temperature/Humidity Display and Self-Setting Atomic Clock, BlackReviewsWorked fine for a year or so, not very accurate, but worked. It has recently stopped picking up the signal from the sensor. Very annoying that Oregon Scientific has such poor customer support. It's almost impossible to get help. Not sure other manufacturers are any better, but I wouldn't buy this again. This was a very nice choise, was a present to my son and still every day he looks and tanks me saying that it works very well. Works well and is easy to set up. But don't drop it. I did and the screen cracked so this is the second one I ordered! I searched high and low for a middle of the road weather station, one that was not to expensive but yet not to cheap. I was looking for indoor and outdoor temps with outdoor humidity and so the fact that this unit provides indoor humidity as well was a bonus. Set up was pretty easy as well. I have tried the outdoor sensor in two different locations and have had no problem with it. I have been using this weatherstation for about a month now and am happy with everything it does. The features I find the most valuable are the large size of the temperature and humidty numbers, the accuracy of all the displayed information, and forecasts. On the overall It is better than I expected and certainly priced right. The only negative I can think of is the fact that it can't be mounted on the wall but I was aware of that when I bought it. Oregon Scientific RMR382A-BK Wireless Indoor/Outdoor Thermometer with Self-Setting Atomic Clock, BlackReviewsOnce it works, this is quite an attractive and convenient thermometer and it seems to give an accurate outdoor reading. That's on the plus side. On the negative side are these: 1) The atomic clock -- do we really need that? -- has never worked, at least not on mine. It picks up a signal, but not the right time. 2) The temperature alarm is a great idea maybe if you're a citrus grower and want to know when the temperature dips below freezing, but a stupid idea for the rest of us. Good luck with figuring out how to deactivate it. (Other reviewers have sufficiently chronicled their travails with this one.) 3) The instruction booklet specifies the use of UM03 and UM04 batteries. Don't be an idiot and chase all over town trying to find batteries with that name; you won't find them. Just use standard AA and AAA alkaline or lithium batteries. 4) The remote sensor won't give an accurate temperature if it is attached to the house, so you are challenged with finding a location away from the house that will be sheltered from the sun and rain as well as in line with the receiver. 5) Setting up the device requires a lot of resetting to make it work. Where are those reset buttons? They are conveniently located pinholes inside the battery cases. Inspired design! 6) Also, the time zone selector is located inside the unit's battery case, just so you will go nuts trying to find it. Even if reliably functioning, this is not a well-designed product and is way too complicated for most people's use. Setting it up is and learning how to use it is frustrating and unnecessarily difficult. The instructions require what seems like hours of study. Buyers should beware that this is anything but a put-the-batteries-in-and-it-goes product. Oregon Scientific really needs to work on this one. It took me awhile to get the positioning right on the outdoor transmitter, I had to keep moving it and resetting it until I just about gave up and THEN it started working. It was cheap and now works fine but it would've been a hassle to send back had it not decided to work. This works well and the clock picks up the signal quickly. The only negative is it can't be hung on the wall. I purchased this RM382A to replace an earlier model Oregon remote thermometer that had failed after 5+ years. This RM382A was a good device, while it lasted. It operated flawlessly for 10 months. Now the remote sensor does not register. The sensor, with a new lithium AA blinks the indicator LED, but the display will not register an outside temperature. This is true even when the sensor is within 5' of the RM382A. The sensor, while outside, was under roof, and out of direct weather. I have no way of telling if the sensor failed, or the main unit failed. I'm highly disappointed with Oregon. This clock is good. But it was a little difficult to get the right time and temperature. Average Rating:![]() |

MIDLAND XT511 2 Way Radio with Dynamo Crank PowerReviewsThe unit works, but only if you live in a rural & flat area. I purchased the item, thinking that it would be great for emergencies. I could use the FM radio, weather station, light. The AM and other bands nothing but static. The Two way communication, nothing but static. The Amazon advertisement says nothing about the limitations of the communication section. Amazon needs to correct that ad. Otherwise if you live in a flat & rural area, it probably works like a champ. If you are looking for an Emergency 2 way radio, look no further. Pros: 1. AM/FM - These are not Bose speakers, but they are clear. It works just like portable battery powered radios. This is useful in emergencies when the TV and cable are knocked down so you can get news from stations that are still transmitting. I take it out with me on my patio and just listen to music or news. 2. Multiple power source - Can run on Alkaline, included Rechargeable battery pack, AC socket, DC through the cigarette lighter, or just cranking to recharge the batteries. With all those sources of energy, you will never run out of power. 3. 5 Watt GMRS Radio - It truly is powerful. Just as strong as my professional radios. Excellent as a base station when traveling or trying to look for help in an emergency. 4. Portability - It comes with a strap so that you dont have to hold it when moving about. It also has a handle so you have a firm grip when carrying it. 5. LED flashlight - You will never be in the dark. I have tried leaving it on the whole night and it still had have charge. I just used the crank to fully charge it again. 6. Weather-proof - I actually used it when there was a one week heavy downpour here LA. It got wet in the rain, but it did not fail. 7. VOX - It has 3 levels of sensitivity. At level 1, it is so sensitive that it will transmit if someone in the room speaks. 8. External Speaker Mic - It is very clear and is functional. It uses the same connectors as my Professional Icom handheld radio, so you can even upgrade the Speaker mic if you wish. Cons: 1. Durability - As a base station, or if you don't drop it it is perfectly fine. It is not built to withstand a drop on a hard surface like Professional radios. This is an emergency base station so, you aren't expected to treat it like a walkie talkie. They never stated that it is as durable as a professional radio, so I was not expecting it. So it isn't such a big deal. 2. No carrying case - It would have made it more useful if they included a small bag where you can put this and the accessories, as well as some basic emergency supplies. But, again, this was something I knew that was not included so, it is just a nice to have. Summary: It does everything it says it can do, and does it very well. If you were caught after an earthquake, this is the equipment you will need to have with you. It delivers what it promises, and is better than the other Midland Walkie talkies. This radio is performing great for me! I and my wife loves it!! AM radio works fine, (don't forget that AM is directional, you have to turn the actual radio to get best reception) FM radio, gets all the stations in my area perfectly, yeah the sound isn't the best but c'mon its a little mono radio! Its not supposed to sound like your home theatre system! ;-) WX, picks up the weather stations fantastically!! Haven't had a Alert yet so can't comment on that. No weather alerts in the past few days here in Boston. GMRS, transmits great, receives great! only tested it out over a couple miles so far. But man over all this is a fine emergency radio, I have 4 Rechargeable AA energizer 2500 MAH batteries and currently running it on the Rechargeable side to run it out and test out the dynamo crank. Oh and hey it can also charge your freaking cell phone through the USB port!! C'mon you can't beat that in a emergency!!!! I will update this review when I hand crank the rechargeable batteries once these run down to one line left and let you know how that works. Take care everybody and stay safe!!! But to be honest, I've had it for less than 24 hours. Here are my 1st impressions: 1) smaller and lighter size than expected-- now I might actually take this backpacking with a group 2) light is bright and beam spread out and wide 3) rechargeable battery is pre-charged 4) digital tuning is nice 4a)- NOAA wx stattions work well (I'm in Seattle) 4b)- AM/FM stations come in nice 5) I tried the 2-way radio, but I didn't pick up anybody so I didn't talk to anyone. 6) the USB port will not charge an iPhone. Otherwise, I love this. UPDATE: 24 hours later I still like this radio. But the little disc/knob that is attached to the hand mic/speaker and is used to clip the hand mic/speaker to the base unit broke off--it's just glued on. Not really meant for storage. This radio is everything I hoped it would be. It is a GMRS radio base station that will operate on AC power, DC power, battery, and dynamo crank. In addition to the GMRS two-way capability it receives AM/FM and weather with severe weather alert. It's compact size allows it to be easily carried. Average Rating:![]() |

Indoor/Outdoor ThermometerReviewsIndoor/Outdoor Thermometers are helpful during the winter to let you know how much clothing you need to put on. This one will do the job, too. Timex Expedition WS4 Widescreen 4-Function Watch (Black/Green)ReviewsI owned a Casio Pathfinder for 10 years. Now, I have Timex Expedition WS4. They both have Triple Sensor Altimeter/Barometer/Digital Compass. They are good watches. I would like to capare them together. To compare a Casio Pathfinder to Timex Expedition WS4: - SET UP. Casio Pathfinder does not need to be set up. You can start using it out of the box. Timex Expedition WS4 does need to be set up correctly for every sensors before you can start using it. If the set up is not correct, you will get the wrong reading. CASIO Win. - READING. Casio Pathfinder has a botton for each of the sensors. You can read the sensors by one push of button. Timex Expedition WS4 has only 1 button for all secsors reading. You have to continue pressing that button until you find the sensor that you want to read. CASIO Win. - SIZE. Both are big watch. No Winner. Timex Expedition WS4 is a good watch to have for your outdoor activities. However, I give Timex Expedition WS4 4 stars. The main reason is because it cannot beat my 10 years old Casio Pathfinder. I was really drawn to the design of this watch and I wanted it to work. Notwithstanding the other reviews, I realized that I could only get an accurate temperature reading with the watch off my wrist. No big deal...all the other watches that measure temperature are like that too. I liked the elastic type strap furnished with this particular model. It looked good, was comfortable and worked well with a metal clasp for both direct wrist use and over outer clothing. About 10 days into wearing it the watch went blank? No hard use just everyday normal wear. The rear battery compartment was a twist off and was easy to get into but was not loose? The battery measured full juice...OK!? I reinserted the battery and tightened the cap and voila' the display came back on and I reset all functions. The watch appeared to be functioning normally and I wore it for a few more days but the barometer would not budge from its 10.-- inHG reading? I decided not to fool with it anymore and returned the watch to Amazon for a refund. I was disappointed but decided to pay a little more for a new Casio PAW2000-1. We'll see how that goes? My husband and I bought the Timex Expedition WS4 Widescreen 4-Function Watch (Orange/Black)for my son's 30th birthday. He has had it exactly one month and the edges of the strap all the way around the watch (includung the keeper loop) have become grungy black. My son is a teacher and takes very good care of his things. After such a short time, the watch looks old and worn. We decided to take a small section of the strap and try to clean it; nothing, not a single thing will clean the grunge off. This is very disappointing for something that is 4 weeks old and cost $194 US with the shipping charges. Great watch but really large, I mean really large, has a lot of great features, nice screen but if you don't like a big watch, donot buy. It's more the interface that attracted me to this watch ... the predictions are pretty accurate , yes the temperature is higher when the watch is worn ... however that's understandable just as if a thermometer was placed near a heat source ... just minus a few degrees and you have the right degree... the compass is a nice function to have and is accurate.. as for the weather prediction icon don't forget it's predicting the temperature in advance so the next 6 - 8 hrs not the current .. and it's always going to be a prediction.. so nothing is set in stone... Overall very pleased with this watch and it's just a fun one as well.... Enjoy~ Average Rating:![]() |
